How to Get a Good Sedation Dentist
October 04, 2011 @ 11:00:55 AM EST

Sedation dentistry, as the term suggests, is the use of a pharmacological agent to relax and calm a patient before and during a dental procedure. The pharmacological agent used by a sedation or sleep dentist belongs to a class of drugs that is called sedatives. Sedatives work by depressing the nerves that are concerned with consciousness (conscious awareness). The sedation could be moderate, whereby the patient is able to respond to stimulation, or it could be deep, whereby the patient does not respond to stimulation.

The two pharmacologic methods used are the enteral route that involves the absorption of meds across the enteric membranes (either swallowed or taken rectally) and the parenteral route, which is the administration across other than through the alimentary canal. Sedation dentistry is advantageous in that the patient will not know what is happening, making it the best option for patients who are afraid of visiting the dentist, it helps patients relax and gives them a pleasant feeling, and it makes the dental work faster. So, how do you go about getting a good sedation dentist?

The sedation dentist you go for should not only be conversant with dentistry, but also with the administration of pharmacological agents. This is because improper administration of pharmacological agents could lead to major complications and even fatality. A good sedation dentist is one who has the necessary training and experience. The sedation dentist should have gone to an accredited school and should be registered by the relevant government and industry regulatory bodies. A good sleep dentist knows how to use different pharmacologic methods. These include laughing gas (nitrous oxide), anti-anxiety liquid and pills, and intravenous drugs. This is important because it means you will get exactly what you are comfortable with. The dentist should have the necessary tools of trade and should have a clean clinic.

To get a good sleep dentist, compare as many options as possible. You should also read independent reviews to get the very best. Reviews are written by people who have been to the dentists and they give you the pros and the cons of different dentists. You could get these reviews in the consumer testimonial and the FAQ sections of the dentist web site, in online discussion forums, and in independent review websites. Consider visiting consumer protection agencies for tips on good sedation dentists. You could also get a good sedation dentist by considering recommendations from friends, relatives, and colleagues.
